MILES.STERNFELD

About Miles.
My name is Miles Sternfeld and I'm a New York City-based director originally from Cleveland. I am passionate about telling traditional stories in untraditional ways – radically reinventing iconic works through contemporary lenses to reveal, often unspoken deeper truths about today's culture. I strive to create theatrical experiences that are emotionally charged, visually striking, and explore questions we have yet to fully articulate or have long avoided asking.
Most recently, I interned with Jamie Lloyd on the Broadway revival of Sunset Blvd and directed Broken Thread at the 14th St. Y. I am currently completing my MFA in Directing at Columbia University School of the Arts under the esteemed mentorship of Anne Bogart, Brian Kulick, and Katie Mitchell. Throughout my time at Columbia, I have directed re-conceptualized productions of Sweeney Todd (staged as a true crime investigation in 1980s America), Next to Normal (told through Diana's mind using 4D audio and binaural headphones), The Seagull, and Romeo & Juliet, alongside new works Rot by Aditya Lal Chada and Timmy by Megan Rivkin. You can view more of my work on my projects page.
Before attending graduate school, I founded and led New City Music Theatre for nearly a decade – a professional theatre company devoted to reimagining beloved musicals while fostering education opportunities for the next generation. Our production of Jane Eyre garnered recognition with a Superior Direction Achievement Award from the Cleveland Critics’ Circle, a collaborative effort with Olivier Award Winner John Caird and Tony nominee Paul Gordon. Notable NCMT directing credits include Into the Woods at Town Hall, Songs for a New World at Radial Park, Aida, Pete(HER)Pan, and The Who’s Tommy, featuring Broadway stars such as Alice Ripley, Tony Yazbeck, Liz Callaway, Bonnie Milligan, and Adrienne Warren.
In addition to my work as a director, I have contributed to several commercial productions, including Finding Neverland at the American Repertory Theatre, Fiddler On The Roof (in Yiddish) at the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, and The Great Society at Lincoln Center Theatre.
In 2016, I created "Werk With Bway," a nationally recognized musical theatre training program that connected emerging artists with working Broadway professionals. The program offered intensive, weeklong workshops focused on audition and college audition preparation, giving students direct access to acclaimed actors, music directors, choreographers, and casting directors. The program helped hundreds of students sharpen their craft, expand their networks, and step more confidently into professional careers.
I am a proud member of SDC and an alumnus of Point Park University’s Musical Theatre Conservatory and Fordham University at Lincoln Center. I hold a BS in Business Administration and am currently in the final year of my MFA in Directing at Columbia University.
