DIRECTOR'S NOTE
I had the great privilege to spearhead the redevelopment of the Tony-nominated musical Jane Eyre with its original writing team, John Caird and Paul Gordon. Over a series of readings and workshops, we reduced the show from a 22-person mega-musical to a 10-person chamber piece. This work streamlined Jane’s emotional journey and created a more concise musical event for theatres around the country to produce. This culminated in a full production at Cleveland Musical Theatre featuring a wonderful team of collaborators. Our production took a surrealist, abstract approach, telling the story from Jane’s painterly artist’s lens, and focusing on her feminist ideals as it pertained to the wake of the #MeToo movement. By making the ensemble “Jane,” we created a physically demanding, actor-driven production set inside an oppressive gothic memory room, where ghosts and spirits roamed.

PREVIEW: CMT’s chamber version of Broadway’s ‘Jane Eyre,’ the musical
It is the result of a year-long partnership with CMT artistic director Miles J. Sternfeld, who was raised in Orange, attended Temple Tifereth-Israel in Beachwood, and currently resides in New York City. Sternfeld is directing this staging.

“Jane Eyre” is a romance tucked inside a not-so-quiet feminist screed, down to the well-known crazy woman in the attic. Back then, the words had to be softer and the attacks more oblique back when Bronte wrote them. But this production shows a clear path to making Jane Eyre, the new revised musical version, an outstanding theatrical experience for years to come.

REVIEW: CMT’s revisited ‘Jane Eyre’ a dark, delicate and disarming musical
Eight stage adaptations of the much-beloved “Jane Eyre” appeared in England and America between 1848 and 1882. There have been many others since but it is hard to imagine any better than the one currently being staged by Cleveland Musical Theatre.
